LEIGH VIVIEN: (1913-1967)
LEIGH VIVIEN: (1913-1967) English actress, Academy Award winner. A.L.S., Vivien, three pages (separate leaves), 4to (onion skin paper), Tickerage Mill (East Sussex), 8th October 1965, to Arnold [Weissberger], on her personal printed stationery. Leigh states that her correspondent´s Tickerage book has just arrived, explaining that she is thrilled with it, and remarking ´It is so perfectñy composed Arnold & all the pictures most lovely. The reflections in the lake and the studio interiors are wonderfully successful´, further adding that Jack [John Merivale] will also be delighted when he sees the pictures, ´I say I know Jack will be delighted as at the moment he is in Bristol seeing his younger sister who has undergone a most serious operation & we are still extremely worried as to the outcome´. Leigh further writes ´We have been staying at Tickerage the last month . being without a gardener-caretaker - fortunately the weather has been quite lovely but it has meant missing the first nights of "Month in the Country" & "Ivanov" which I long to see. It is really warming that Johnnie [John Gielgud] has had such a huge success. I am still waiting on the script of "A Severed Head" - work is held up for a time as Rafael (sic; Frederic Raphael) is ill. Goodness how I wish I could find something of interest!´. Some light creasing, a couple of staple holes to the upper left corner of each page, and a tear to the left edge of the first page, only very slightly affecting a couple of words of text. G

John Merivale (1917-1990) Canadian-born British actor, the partner of Vivien Leigh from 1960-67.
A Month in the Country is a play in five acts by Ivan Turgenev and was staged at the Cambridge Theatre in London in September 1965. The production was directed by Michael Redgrave, who also starred in it alongside Ingrid Bergman.
Ivanov is a play in four acts by Anton Chekhov and was staged at the Phoenix Theatre in London, also in September 1965. The title character was portrayed by John Gielgud.
Frederic Raphael wrote the screenplay to A Severed Head, which was based on Iris Murdoch´s 1961 novel of the same title. It was not made into a film until 1970, directed by Dick Clement and starring Claire Bloom, Lee Remick, Richard Attenborough and Ian Holm.
